Faculty of Engineering Journal Rises into the Top Tier of Academic Publishing

The International Review of Applied Sciences and Engineering (IRASE), published by the Faculty of Engineering, has been ranked among the top 25% of journals by SCImago Journal & Country Rank and has also improved in three additional categories.

According to the latest SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) classifications, IRASE has advanced to Q1 in Architecture, Q2 in Engineering, and Q3 in Management Science and Operational Research.

Géza Husi, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, highlighted the broader significance of this achievement, noting that the journal now holds at least a Q3 ranking across all relevant disciplines—an indicator of a stable and well-balanced international presence.

“These results provide clear confirmation of the deliberate scientific and quality development strategy pursued by the Faculty in recent years. IRASE’s strengthening position aligns closely with our strategic objectives: enhancing international scientific visibility, consistently elevating publication quality, and fostering the integrated representation of applied engineering and architectural sciences. The current rankings also reaffirm a strategic decision made three to four years ago, aimed specifically at improving international recognition,” the Dean stated.

He emphasized that IRASE’s progress should not be seen in isolation, but rather as part of a broader shift in the institution’s scientific performance. In recent years, a marked change in approach—prioritizing high-impact research outcomes that meet international standards—has become increasingly evident, now clearly reflected in the journal’s classification.

According to Géza Husi, IRASE’s current standing further strengthens the position of both the Faculty and the university in technical disciplines, particularly in terms of the quality and attractiveness of doctoral programmes, research and innovation performance, grant activity, and international scientific collaboration.

Ákos Lakatos, Editor-in-Chief of IRASE and Head of the Department of Building Services and Building Engineering, added that the SCImago ranking places the journal in a leading position among Hungarian university-affiliated engineering journals.

Founded in 2010 by the Faculty, the journal has undergone continuous development. Ferenc Kalmár served as Editor-in-Chief until 2020, when Ákos Lakatos succeeded him.

“Since its launch, the journal has steadily evolved. It was indexed in Scopus in 2017 and has been ranked by SCImago since 2018. Owing to its interdisciplinary scope, it competes across multiple subject areas, and thanks to the dedicated efforts of both former and current editors, its performance indicators have shown consistent improvement,” the Editor-in-Chief noted.

Ádám Szabó of the Research Support Department at the University and National Library of Debrecen pointed out that the institution currently manages more than 50 journals, 38 of which operate on the Dejournals platform, the university’s Open Journal Systems (OJS) interface. IRASE is published by Akadémiai Kiadó.

Dejournals is a Diamond Open Access platform maintained by the university that provides journals with technical infrastructure and professional support to enhance their visibility.

“In recent years, these publications have undergone substantial professional development. Their international visibility has increased, their author base has expanded, and a growing number meet international indexing and quality standards. This trajectory demonstrates how academic journals are dynamically adapting to the evolving expectations of global scientific communication,” Ádám Szabó added.
