A Week of Science, Innovation and Inspiration at the Faculty of Engineering

An international scientific conference, a mechanical engineering exhibition and job fair, student research presentations, and special art exhibitions await visitors at the University of Debrecen's Faculty of Engineering.

As part of the Celebration of Hungarian Science, the Faculty will be buzzing with activity this week, bringing together researchers, lecturers, students, and industry professionals to share their achievements, experiences, and ideas shaping the future.

November 3 marks the Celebration of Hungarian Science. The date commemorates the historic gesture of Count István Széchenyi, who, in 1825, offered one year's income from his estates, laying the foundations for what would become the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Every year, numerous higher education institutions join the nationwide celebration, organising conferences, lectures, and exhibitions to highlight the diversity of science and the importance of research to society.

This year, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Debrecen is celebrating with a particularly rich programme of events. Throughout the week, the Faculty will provide opportunities for international scientific exchange, university–industry collaboration, young researchers to present their work, and the exploration of connections between engineering and the arts.

International Scientific Conference and Engineering Exhibition

The highlight of the week is the Mechanical Engineering Professional Days, organised for the twelfth time by the Department of Mechanical Engineering on November 5–6. The centrepiece of the two-day event is the 12th International Scientific Conference on Advances in Mechanical Engineering (ISCAME).

The impressive figures reflect the international significance of this year's conference: 332 participants have registered from 27 countries, representing 36 nationalities. The programme features 171 scientific presentations and 66 posters showcasing the latest research findings.

The plenary lectures will address several key areas of mechanical engineering. Aleksandar Sedmak from the University of Belgrade will discuss applications of fracture mechanics in structural integrity assessment, while Hans-Peter Kemser from BMW Manufacturing Hungary will present intelligent manufacturing solutions at BMW iFACTORY. Carsten Gachot from TU Wien will explore innovative approaches to friction engineering, and Viktor Sári-Barnácz from Robert Bosch Ltd. will focus on practical aspects of elastomer tribology.

Alongside the conference, the Mechanical Engineering Exhibition and Job Fair will welcome representatives from 29 companies this year. The exhibition provides a direct link between university education, scientific research, and industrial practice. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the participating companies, their technologies, and developments, while students can establish professional contacts and explore career opportunities in engineering.

Where Art Meets Engineering

The scientific and professional events will be complemented by a variety of cultural programmes. On November 4 at 5:00 p.m., an exhibition by graphic artist Viktor Kostyál, entitled "In the Picture – An Exhibition About Great Figures in Engineering", will open at the University and National Library's Engineering Library (DEENK). The exhibition will be officially opened by designer Éva Molnár.

The programme will continue on November 17 at 12:00 noon with a book presentation at the Engineering Library, introducing Contemporary Architecture in Eastern Hungary, 1978–2025. The event will be moderated by Edward Kovács, a lecturer at the Faculty's Department of Architecture and a reviewer of the volume.

The Engineering Library's exhibitions and cultural events also demonstrate the many connections between engineering thinking, artistic creativity, and innovative approaches to problem-solving.

The Next Generation of Researchers Takes Centre Stage

Another important event of the week is the Faculty's Scientific Students' Associations Conference (TDK), beginning on November 6 at 9:00 a.m. The conference provides an opportunity for talented students and young people interested in research to present their scientific work.

In addition to bachelor's and master's students, secondary school students conducting research related to the Faculty may also participate. The TDK conference offers young researchers valuable experience in presenting their findings, receiving professional feedback, and developing their scientific skills. It also plays an important role in the Faculty's commitment to nurturing young talent.

A Week Showcasing the Diversity of the Faculty

Every year, the Celebration of Hungarian Science provides an opportunity to highlight the achievements of researchers, new scientific discoveries, and the practical applications of knowledge. This year's events at the Faculty of Engineering bring these values to life, uniting international scientific research, industrial innovation, student talent development, and artistic creativity within a single week.

The common message of the events taking place during the first week of November is that science is not only about research results, but also about meaningful encounters, collaboration, and new opportunities. Throughout the week, the Faculty of Engineering will offer numerous opportunities for participants to experience these connections first-hand.
