In order to take the state exam, please note:
- If you have unpaid items (also tuition fees, library fines) on Neptun, please pay them off until 17 May 2024.
- You need the subject, called Work and Fire Safety Training signed on Neptun.
- You need one semester of Physical Education signed on Neptun.
- You need to complete 6 credit points of optional courses.
- Every remaining grade must be submitted on Neptun by 17 May 2024.
Important: After a graduand has signed up for the state exam, he/she is considered to be a graduating student, thus dates and deadlines of the study period and exam period for graduating students apply to him/her irrespective of whether he/she is taking non-finalist (14-week) courses or not.
Day of the State Exam
In case a graduand has signed up for the state exam previously but for some reasons cannot come, he/she is supposed to inform the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the International Office (Faculty of Engineering) about his/her absence.
All candidates (independent from the order of candidates taking the state exam) are expected to arrive for the start of the state exam (usually 7:30 a.m.).
Dress code: Candidates are expected to wear something smart which reflects that this is a special and more formal occasion.
The day before the real state exam a so-called mock state exam (a practice exam before the official one, used to practise for the real exam) is conducted:
The final ppt files (on a USB stick) to thesis have to be copied to the university computer and presented. Attendance is obligatory. You are not required to wear something smart in the mock state exam. Grades will not be awarded in the mock state exam. Approx. 8-10 slides should be prepared, the presentation should not take more than 10 minutes.
The order of the candidates taking the state exam and the members of the committee will be announced previously. Committee chair is called upon and mandated by the dean with the consent of the Faculty Council. He/she is selected from the acknowledged internal and external experts of the professional field. The committee consists of – besides the chair – at least two members and the examiner. The number of examination boards is dependent upon the number of candidates.
The committee assesses performance in the state exam and decides on thesis grade and diploma grade in closed sitting after the defences. In controversial cases the chair takes the decision. At the end of the state exam the results are announced by the committee chair.
Improving failed state exam
State exam has to be retaken if any of its part is a fail. The ensuing state exam period is the soonest that the re-sit is allowed. In case the student successfully completes any part of the state exam (defending thesis or oral exam in subjects of the state exam), he/she is supposed to improve only the failed part. Retake state exam is allowed twice in each part. Once you have successfully passed the state exam, improvement is no longer possible.
Calculating diploma grade (Curriculum 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and onwards)
Grade=(A+B)/2, where
A: Average of the grades of the subjects of the state exam
B: Grade awarded for defending thesis
Classification of the award:
Outstanding 4.81 – 5.00
Excellent 4.51 – 4.80
Good 3.51 – 4.50
Satisfactory 2.51 – 3.50
Pass 2.00 – 2.50
Classification "with honours"
A diploma with honours is given if
- the student received an excellent grade (5) in all the subjects of the state exam and for the thesis defence,
- the student received an excellent grade (5) for all the comprehensive exams,
- the grade point average of all his/her other examination grades and seminar grades is a minimum of 4.00 or higher, and
- the student did not receive a grade lower than satisfactory (3) during all of his/her studies.
Diploma
Within 30 days of the successful state exam the diploma is issued and given out by the Faculty at the graduand’s special request. Otherwise, the diploma will be awarded to him/her at the graduation ceremony of the Faculty.
The diploma is an official document decorated with the coat of arms of Hungary which verifies the successful completion of studies in the Mechanical Engineering graduate program. The diploma contains the following data: name of HEI (higher education institution); institutional identification number; serial number of diploma; name of diploma holder; date and place of his/her birth; level of qualification; training program; specialization; mode of attendance; place, day, month and year issued. Furthermore, it has to contain the rector’s (or vice-rector’s) original signature and the seal of HEI. The University keeps a record of the diplomas issued.
In case a graduand needs to prove the completion of studies before the graduation ceremony, a certificate can be issued at his/her special request. This document does not contain any reference to qualification, it merely proves that the candidate has taken a successful state exam. The Faculty keeps a record of the certificates issued.
Library
Graduands must return all books on loan and pay all outstanding charges before the end of their course or before they leave, otherwise they will not be allowed to take the state exam in the given term. Those who fail to return their books will be charged for the cost of replacement. In the case of those graduating the books must be returned, or the cost of replacement paid, and all other outstanding charges paid until the last working day before the state exam.
