Field Trip to Vienna, Schaeffler Austria Company (2018 January)

Faculty of Engineering organised a field trip for second or third year international students in 2018 January with a visit at Schaeffler Austria Company in Bendorf.
Below you can read summeries about the trip and a few photos.

"On January 31st we visited Schaeffler company in Austria.
As we arrived the company we were welcomed by the company’s quality manager which was the first indicator of the importance of quality to the company, it was clear they wanted to give us a field trip at high quality which made me think of quality first, no matter what the project am working on, Steve Jobs said “Quality is much better than quantity. One home run is much
better than doubles”.
Then the quality manager gave us a proper tour inside the company and showed us the process, products and the flow of work within the company.
Key observations:
• The company have training and qualification programs for their employees to hold a position and responsibly which resulted in keeping the high quality of their products.
• All the machines were linked through a program and were showed on tablet which was used by the employees to check the integrity of the machines, which ones need maintenance, and which are stable…. etc.
• For me as a management student, I was more focused on the quality manager, the way he welcomed us, explanation throughout the tour, happy face, friendly, open to questions and answering in best way possible. All those features and behavior was a great asset for me in which I can use
in my future carrier.
• And finally, they mentioned some tools that were taught by our lecturers during classes for example (Pareto charts which we learned from Dr. Matko and KPI tools (5-year future plans) which we learned from Ms. Agnes).
In conclusion I would say the trip was fruitful, the diversity of the group made me happy and find new friends, gain new experience.
Your nice and friendly supervision made the journey as enjoyable as possible."

"Visiting Schaffler was amazing, it was organized very well. It was a very good opportunity to see this factory and their products, especially the way of using industry 4.0 .... it's kind of broaden horizons. They were very kind and friendly.
I wished if it was longer again to get the most available benefits ... just one thing, the big number of students sometimes is a problem because of congregating near to the instructor.
I hope you to arrange like this visit every month to other factories."

"Let me start that the trip was holded by one of the Greats company now days with 13.3-billion-euro income in 2016, Not only that but also the trip was also one of the Highest technical and productivity of her factories in Schaeffler Austria.
Schaeffler Group is including three main companies under its own flag LUK, INA and FAG.
As from my point of view Schaeffler one of the Greatest industrial experience I have ever passed by, and it show how to work hard and also in intelligent way the place there was so friendly exciting helping you to know more as they were ting all of their best to Satisfy your desire about how they work and how they act and also How they can deal with one of the most important industrial field nowadays.
Finally I want to Thank our host for his time and He was friendly and also I want to thanks my campus for this trip it was amazing experience for all of us as I think and I wish if there a program between the university and other industrial factories as it is very useful for our studies as I think having knowledge without experience and how to use it making you just scientist Not engineer."

"At the beginning, I have to talk about Schaeffle, a company that specializes in producing and exporting car parts to major companies such as Ferrari.
The tour included a basic definition of the company and its organizational structure from its inception to the present time, and then we started to watch the production, processing and packaging of the products, after that we saw the review for productivity of each machine and monitor the delays or stop and then we went to the measurement and auditing section, where they record all the measurements from the machines and take samples for accurate measurement, and all this to reduce the failure rate in products to encourage large companies to deal with them, which is reduced by 10% each year and continue to work in it!!.
After showing us a brief overview of their “short” annual vision and “long-term” vision 5 years, it turned out that it was a company that continued to strive for the best and not satisfied with what they have, throughout the presentation we discovered that they are using two methods of analysis that we studied in the previous semester "Pareto & SWOT" This proves that the most important decisions can be made from the simplest methods, but if we use them correctly."

"I’m writing this letter to express my thanks and share the experience I had in the industrial trip to Sheaffler company which has been organized by the Faculty of Engineering.
It was Great opportunity to see the high-level management systems in industrial factories I have Bsc in Industrial engineering and this trip illustrated the heart of my study, I was able to see how they deal with complex large industries and manage it with great tools, train and build people skills along with intelligent systems which helps you to take decisions based on facts and key references.
The best thing is that after the trip you will be able to put a plan for a future PhD fields ( for me I liked the lean management and decision making systems), Also it gives you full aspect on the work you will have in the future (for me Quality and presses engineer) and then you will be able to put a plan to enforce yourself with the knowledge needed to access this factories in the future.
This trip allowed me to put a list of needed managerial tools which I need to add to my knowledge, this is the list I gathered from this journey we had:
-REFA methodology -TPM Total productive maintenance - digital roadmap
- Systems Engineering Plan (SEP) - KANBAN with signal ‘Japanese method’
- bottonneck diagram
I really like to join the internship program they have and for sure I will apply and enforce my self with required knowledge to gain a summer internship in Sheaffler Austria or even in Sheaffler Debrecen here.
All thanks and gratitude for Professor Agnes , Matko, the faculty of engineering and all responsible for organizing this high valued trip."

"Schaeffler Group is a OEM manufacturer of Bearings.
The Schaeffler Group's INA and FAG brands stand for the development and manufacture of high-quality rolling bearings, plain bearings, linear guidance systems, and engine components for mechanical engineering, aerospace and the automotive industry worldwide.
− At their facility in Austria, they manufacturer taper roller bearing with wheel hub assembly which mainly cater the automotive segment.
− Material flow from various suppliers to process of manufacturing and assembly was shown in detail.
− Various techniques for production such as TPM, KAN-BAN was explained according industry. And quality management techniques such as SWOT analysis, Bottle neck importance, Kaizen, SMED.
− Heat treatment of the bearing inner race and outer race, pre-loading of the bearing and operation of bearing was explained.
− The plant is awarded four stars for quality and customer satisfaction compliance and major contribution from six sigma and SMED methods."

"In the visit to the Schaeffler bearing plant in Austria, we were warmly received. After a short introduction, we could walk around the factory, looking at the processes, stages, environment and technologies used to in one of the best factories around the world. It was evident that the management of the processes is the key to improvement, not only of the product, but also on the improvement of work of employees, reducing wastes, time losses and complaints about delivery times and quality of their products. It was also evident that the automation is going to be the future of factories, eliminating unnecessary loss of time and human work on simple tasks. This visit made me realize the importance of data collection in the optimization of processes; and, in addition, showed the necessary profile of workers on important positions in the industry."

"The company visit was useful and helpful to start understanding the industrial Revolution 4.0 that is happening in the present, type of machines being used, controlled and managed.
They are mainly producing bearing, shaft and wide range of mechanical parts for different types for transportation assets, one of the unique methods they are following is that they do not store their products neither they got  warehouses, which means they produce and sell fresh continuous products.
The presentation concentrated on their mission vision statements, their main field of production and industrial branches. All these points were strongly connected with our studies which demonstrated what our future careers would be, Also it have been noticed that the company are using SWOT and Pareto techniques to push the company to better and modern managing techniques in order to increase their production rats."

"We left Debrecen on 30th January, 2018 at 6:40 AM for a two day trip to Schaffler with a brief stop over in Vienna before proceeding to Bendorf. The journey was very interesting as it provided opportunities for most to make friends even amongst ourselves simply because many of the international students have not had the opportunity to interact together deeply outside academics program or activities. The trip also helped us to learn from one another through a far reaching conversations cutting across education, cultures, global events and development and academics topics which were being discussed during the journey, to put it simply, FRIENDSHIPS was built which would not have been possible if such trip have not been organized. At the Company, We have the opportunity to see how Theories were applied and utilized for practical purposes from science to engineering, communication to internet of things and practicality of industrial management. We gained knowledge on how a typical manufacturing/production line works in a modern technological era, application of innovation and internet of things. Practicality of Industry 4.0 was another interesting aspect and use of SAP (Systems Application and Products) in overall industrial management process. The trip is very important to my field (Mechatronics Engineering) as I came across many of what I have been taught and read particularly importance of Robots in Industrialization, more so, aspect of Control Engineering could not be more clearer as I saw first hand the relevance of my specialization in system automation. I will recommend more of such trips should be organized in other to expose the students to the applications of theories in other to increase there knowledge and confidence and most importantly, providing an opportunity for them understand what is expected in any working environment. In future, all Engineering Students should be included as there is no aspect of Engineering that would not be available in most companies just as we saw at Schaffler, Bendorf."

"On the 30th of January, 2017, we reported in front of school dormitory where we took attendance and then waited for some few other students who were yet to be present. At 06.35, the bus left for Vienna from Debrecen. We passed through a few major cities including Budapest before arriving at our destination around 14.30 where we were allowed to go explore the city on our own for hours. We reported back to the bus stop at 20:00.
The next destination was Koszeg, which were a few hours from Vienna. There we spent the night in a dormitory. We were divided into rooms and that was how the day was ended. We were also given the departure time for the next day which was 08:00am.
On the 31st of January, we left the dormitory in Koszeg and continued our journey to Bendorf. We arrived about 30 minutes before 10.00 and we went into the Schaeffler company. We were met by a representative who briefed us about the history and achievements of the company. We were also shown the various departments involved in the bearing process.
As a mechanical Engineering student, I found that a very unique opportunity since it gave me a vivid understanding of most of things we have studied so far such as Machine Elements and Material Science to mention a few which looked a bit unrealistic in theory. Few questions were asked which were all answered satisfactorily.
Afterwards, we had lunch and then, we set out on our way back to Debrecen. We arrived at Debrecen by 21.30."

"The visit of Schaeffler in Bendorf was an important point in practical education skills. It was interesting to understand how theoretical information works in the real company, in the real production. Furthermore, it was amazing to see how works real-time processing through tablets and other devices which use the same online database."

"My name is Dastan and I am a mechanical engineering student, 2nd year. On the 30th and 31st of the January I took a part in trip to the Vienna and to Schaeffler Company in Berndorf. This trip was full of interest things, including discovery of Austria.
I have to mention that trip to Austria was my first experience of visiting to factory on the territory of Europe. From the moment when we started our acquaintance with Schaeffler, I have realized that they have a perfectly organized structure in the company.  Later, I understood that I was right. They pay attention for all small details on the factory-line. Starting from the managing of logistics and ending by clothes of the workers, everything can be a great example for everyone. The way of work is very serious in every aspect of the production, so I think that is why the quality of products is on the high level. They are always going forward, by using their own experience. Important to notice, that they always use the tactic way of working, systematically.  After the trip, I have made many decisions about my own way of working and studying. I think it is possible to use the same approach to work, as they do, so can be better version of myself. In addition, I could see my future workplace in real life, feel it. By this trip, I have huge amount of motivation to study and work more, I know how I should manage my own time and made my targets for the future. I want to thank kindly the head of our faculty, people who organized trip and of course Schaeffler company, because they made great job for our future, the have shown us new possibilities and opened our eyes for many things."
